Why PVC, Why Winsa?

PVC windows have always been one of the most suitable choices for the consumers delivering a high level of insulation, durability, maintenance and resistance values with a reliability proven by scientific research.

Why PVC?

Wood, aluminum and PVC are among the materials widely used in the manufacturing of windows. Although delivering good results in terms of insulation, wood is not a material that is in high demand since it requires continuous maintenance, tends to be deformed quickly and costs higher. In spite of a high level of resistance it offers, aluminum is not very advantageous due to its low insulation values and high cost.

PVC, on the other hand, is most popular material since it has a good level of insulation, offers a longer useful life requiring less or no maintenance, delivers a high level of resistance with a suitable design and support components and costs less compared to wood and aluminum.

In the past, there have been many conflicting discussions about PVC as a manufacturing material. Scientific research, however, suggests that PVC has become a material that contributes to sustainable development through modern manufacturing methods and processing standards. This applies in particular to the windows made of PVC profiles.

Important facts about PVC as a material used in the window industry;
  • Only 4% of the world’s gas and oil reserves is consumed for the production of plastics and, only 1% thereof is used for PVC. 40% of the world’s gas and oil reserves is used for heating and supplying energy to buildings.
  • The basic component of PVC is chlorine derived from rock salt and, the crude oil represents only 43% of this material.
  • PVC windows are considered at the top of the range in terms of eco-balance and eco-efficient analyses.
  • New PVC windows deliver a service life of more than 50 years.
  • PVC manufacturers have certain commitments in respect of environmental issues and regarding ecological and sustainable manufacturing processes.
  • The PVC contents of the windows are recycled for the purpose of manufacturing PVC granules and, it is possible to use them seven times more to manufacture windows.

What are the Advantages Delivered by PVC Windows?

PVC windows offer a very good of cost / benefit ratio.

PVC windows deliver distinctive and significant cost advantages both when purchased and during entire the useful life. Wooden windows are expensive by about 20-30% compared to PVC profiles and, aluminum windows are expensive by 30% which makes them the highest-priced alternative. PVC windows provide savings in the long term considering the high potential of energy savings they offer and a minimum maintenance requirement during the entire useful life of more than 50 years.

It is easy to maintain PVC windows.

It is very easy to maintain quality PVC windows, which require a minimum level of maintenance. Wooden windows, on the other hand, require a glazing replacement about once every two years and, they need to be painted once every five years. PVC granules manufactured using the cutting edge technologies are very durable against weather conditions and resistant to light. All you need to clean the window frames is a liquid dishwashing detergent because the smooth profile surfaces are extremely easy to maintain.

PVC windows are distinctively durable.

Unlike the windows made of wood, PVC windows deliver a significantly longer useful life. Quality windows stand out with a resistance to deformation and, a high level of functionality maintained for many years. Considering a useful life they offer for at least 50 years, PVC windows are a perfect investment to maintain the value of the buildings where they are installed.

PVC windows have a perfect eco-balance.

PVC windows are 100% recyclable and thus ensure savings in resources. 40% of the world’s gas and oil reserves is consumed in heating and supplying energy to the buildings, while only 4% thereof is used for the plastics production, and only 1% thereof corresponds to the use in the production of PVC. PVC profiles are not only recyclable but also very durable and cause less pollution, which helps the creation of a perfect eco-balance and, highly contributes to the protection of environment. Compared to wooden windows, PVC windows are longer lasting and consume significantly less energy during the manufacturing process.

Comparison between the Profile Performances of PVC and Aluminum Profiles in Respect of Carbon Footprint

PVC profiles deliver the best result in the comparison of the U values (heat transmission coefficient W/(m2.-K)). Aluminum profiles, on the other hand, have a higher U value since they are metal.

Carbon Footprint: A Carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact the human activities have on the environment in terms of the greenhouse amount expressed as a weight of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. A Carbon Footprint is intended to calculate the greenhouse emission amount caused by a business or an activity and, commonly represents the global warming potential. It is expressed as a weight of CO2 produced in kilograms or tons.

A research was made to calculate and compare the carbon footprints of PVC and Aluminum window profiles. An analysis carried out under the scope of this research suggests that the carbon footprint caused by PVC window profiles is 248.8 kg of CO2 while that of Aluminum window profiles is 486.0 kg of CO2. The carbon footprint caused by Aluminum window profiles is 2 times that of PVC window profiles. Further, the thermal performance delivered by PVC profiles is higher. Because of a higher performance delivered by PVC profiles, this material is preferred for the manufacturing of windows.

This research has proved that PVC window profiles must be preferred for a sustainable design considering the energy performance they deliver as well as other performance indicators such as energy, thermal and structural characteristics during the entire life cycle of a product.
